"Liquidation" and "Conceptuality", Balsa Wood Sculptures

Writer: Sam StoneSam Stone

The Balsa Wood assignment was meant to challenge the students' beginning abilities to sculpture by conforming them to a list of specific materials and themes. This then created a cohesive set of abstracted works by each student.

This sculpture was meant to push the limits of the project, as innovation was the goal. By using liquid, it was a new process and experience for viewers. Interactive art is something I strive for, so this work was featured as both a performance and a representation of what could be.

12"x 5"x 3", Wood Glue, India Ink, Balsa Wood, Clear Packing Tape, Nails, Thread
"Liquidation", showing elements of texture; 12"x 5"x 3", Wood Glue, India Ink, Balsa Wood, Clear Packing Tape, Nails, Thread

"Conceptuality", showing elements of repetition; 8"x 3"x 2", Balsa Wood, Black and White India Ink, Masking Tape, Nails, Paper, Hot Glue

This sculpture represents the capabilities of art, even through one shape. It is often thought that art must be complex to get the point across, but with this work, I derived the complexity from a single shape itself rather than multiple.
