"A Soliloquy of an Ailment", Memento

6"x 3"x 3", Broken Sticks, Zip Ties

This work challenged me to only use 1-3 materials for construction, and revolved around a memory. The memory I chose dealt with my past issues of depression and suicidal thought. There are nineteen broken sticks, demonstrating the nineteen years of my life that I faced such thoughts. The zip ties are meant to visualize nooses while also demonstrating the tight grip that the opinions of others had on the vision of myself. While the zip ties held me up, they were also a main reason for my strong sadness. They are held in different places showing that one problem could not resolve the others, and i must be healed as a whole to truly escape depression. I chose sticks so the object would feel rough and uncomfortable in one's hands, and to demonstrate that the viewer could easily break the object, metaphorically meaning that others could easily break me, while the sticks themselves cannot escape without outside aid.
